Instructions for use of the interactive textbook

Even though using the interactive textbook is very simple (and you cannot mess it up), we have nonetheless prepared some short instructions for you.

1. Navigating through the pages of the interactive textbook

You can navigate through the pages of the interactive textbook in two ways:

On a computer:

  1. Move your mouse cursor to the left or the right edge of the screen. Click on the arrow which appears on the edge of the page.
  2. Press the left or the right arrow key on your keyboard.

On a tablet:

  1. Touch the left or the right edge of the screen. Then touch the arrow which appears on the edge of the page.
  2. Touch the page and, using your finger, drag it left or right.

2. Using the interactive and multimedia contents

The interactive pages are packed with photographs, educational films, animations, interactive activities and other interactive items. Each of these items can be opened by touching or clicking it or the icon that stands for it.

2.1 Photo gallery

You will recognize the photo gallery by its distinctive dots on the bottom edge of the photograph. The number of dots equals the number of photographs in the gallery. The photographs in the gallery progress automatically in intervals of a few seconds in length; you can browse through them though by clicking/touching the corresponding dot if you wish. The gallery can be maximised to full-screen by clicking/touching it. Navigate through the maximised photographs by clicking/touching a dot under the photograph or by dragging the photograph to the left or to the right with your mouse or finger. The maximised gallery can be closed by clicking/touching the icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

2.2 Educational films

The play button is right in the centre of the educational film window. Clicking/touching it will start the film in full-screen view. While the film is playing, there is a simple tool bar on the bottom of the page:

pause/continue button
a slider which allows to quickly jump to different parts of the film
film duration
volume slider
full-screen view button

To close the window, click/touch the icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

2.3 Animations

Animations are represented by the icon. Clicking/touching the icon will open the maximised animation.

Clicking/touching the icon will open the animation description and instructions.

Clicking/touching the blue dots will show the corresponding descriptions and highlight individual content. Close the animation by clicking/touching the icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

2.4 3D simulations

3D simulations are represented by the icon and allow you to rotate the items shown. Open the simulations by clicking/touching the icon.

Rotate the item by clicking or touching and dragging it to the left or to the right.

Clicking/touching the icon will open the animation description and instructions.

Some pages offer additional information, partly hidden in boxes like the one shown above. Open these by clicking/touching the box. To close, click/touch the box again.

3. The menu bar

The menu bar appears when you move your mouse to the upper edge of the page or when you touch the upper edge of the page on your tablet. The bar disappears again when you click/touch anywhere below it. You can access the menu bar features by clicking/touching the selected icon. Beside icons, the menu bar also includes the textbook title and the chapter title and the current page number (e.g. , where 8 means the chapter number and 1 the consecutive page of the chapter).

The menu bar includes the following icons:
